Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive medical treatment that involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This increases the amount of oxygen delivered to your tissues by up to 20x, dissolved in your blood plasma—enhancing tissue oxygenation, cellular repair, and overall healing potential throughout the body. At Virginia Sport & Spine Institute, we utilize HBOT as part of our integrative approach to recovery, rehabilitation, and performance.

How HBOT Works

Who Can Benefit

How HBOT Works

Under normal conditions, oxygen is carried in your red blood cells. Inside a hyperbaric chamber, increased atmospheric pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into your plasma, reaching tissues with limited or compromised blood flow. This process is governed by Boyle’s Law and Henry’s Law—scientific principles that explain how gas behaves under pressure, and how increased pressure enhances oxygen delivery.

Why It Works

Who Can Benefit

How HBOT Works

  • Boosts tissue oxygenation
  • Reduces inflammation and swelling
  • Accelerates cellular repair and regeneration
  • Stimulates angiogenesis and neuroplasticity
  • Supports immune, neurological, and musculoskeletal systems

Who Can Benefit

Key Benefits of HBOT

  • Athletes: faster recovery from injury, post-op healing, improved endurance and neurocognitive function
  • Neurological Conditions: post-concussion syndrome, TBI, stroke recovery, MS, ALS, autism spectrum disorder
  • Chronic Pain/Inflammation: fibromyalgia, long COVID, autoimmune conditions
  • Wound Healing: diabetic ulcers, radiation injury, non-healing wounds
  • Mental Health Support: adjunctive therapy for depression and PTSD
  • Cancer Support: improve quality of life, counteract radiation side effects (FDA-cleared)

Research-Based & Off-Label Uses (Offered as part of comprehensive care)

Key Benefits of HBOT

Backed by decades of research and clinical use, HBOT has demonstrated a wide range of physiological benefits, including:

  • Improved Energy Production: Boosts cellular ATP via mitochondrial biogenesis.
  • Enhanced Healing: Promotes angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and tissue regeneration.
  • Reduced Inflammation: Decreases pro-inflammatory markers and swelling.
  • Pain Relief: Particularly effective for inflammatory and neuropathic pain.
  • Immune Support: Enhances phagocytosis and antimicrobial defense.
  • Neuroprotection: Supports recovery from traumatic brain injury, concussion, and neurodegenerative conditions.
